Trinity girls win wrestling title; Martin boys 2nd again; Weatherford senior 3-peats
Euless Trinity arrived at the 2020 UIL State Wrestling Championships at the Berry Center with five qualifiers in the girls division on Friday and Saturday.
It made the most of each match and came away with the girls Class 6A state team title.
The Trojans, though, didn’t crown an individual champion. They relied on a second place and three third-place finishes to score 88 points and outdistance Katy Tompkins’ 75.
It’s the first-ever team wrestling title for Trinity, according to head coach Travis Clark.
“Coming in we expected all five to place, but lost one in the blood round,” Clark said.
Carmen Allred was the state runner-up at 110 pounds while third place finishers were Carlie Allred (102), Sydney Harper (128) and Hayley Wilcox (165). Iashea Jackson (119) was able to add six points.
“We missed the state title by two points three years ago,” said Clark. “We started rebuilding and we’re back. We’ll be back next year to repeat.
“They showed up every day and did the extras – wrestling on club teams, tried their hand at the national team and battled all year long and got to the right weight classes. The pushed each other inside and outside the practice room to come together as one family.”
Trinity is the second straight girls team from the Fort Worth area to claim the state title as Keller Timber Creek took the gold last year.
Trinity’s Cameron Bye (182) finished second for the boys and went 47-4.
Martin boys take home silver again
Arlington Martin was again the state runner-up behind Allen, which won its 11th straight state championship. It’s the fourth-straight year the Warriors finished second.
Martin claimed individual titles by Dominic Chavez (120) and Donavan Whitted (126), who both repeated.
Whitted defeated Keller Central’s Jacob Garcia in the finals, 5-3.
They added to their point total with a runner-up finish by Shawn Ryncarz (106), third place by Jaden Two Lance (138) and fifth place by Julius Alfaro (152).
Martin head coach Patrick Dunn felt this year’s team had achieved above expectations after they came into the year having to replace six starters.
“I don’t coach to win state titles. I coach to create men of character,” Dunn said. “As long as we wrestle the best we can, I’m fine with it.”
Martin brother-sister pair, senior Dominic Chavez and junior Samara Chavez (110) won their second straight state titles. This year’s state tournament had the same result for the siblings, but they felt the road to the podium was a bit different.
“Last year, it seemed I had all the tough kids in my half of the bracket,” Dominic said.
No doubt, the returning state champ had a better seeding in this year’s bracket and finished the season 50-3.
Samara (24-0) said the level of girls wrestling in Texas has improved rapidly, making more of her opponents tougher than in previous years.
