Grapevine Faith controlled the ball for most of the first half, but its game on Friday was scoreless at intermission.

However, the Lady Lions kept pushing the tempo and knew a goal was coming.

Junior Annie Severide scored in the 62nd minute and junior Landri Trueblood added the dagger just three minutes later as Faith beat San Antonio Christian, 2-0, in the TAPPS Division 2 state championship at Waco ISD Stadium.

Faith captures the title for the second straight season and third in the past four years.

It finishes the season 18-0 and 37-1 in the past two years.

“Coached them for five years with three state championships. You can’t beat that,” Faith coach Cat Meyer said.

San Antonio Christian, a two-time state winner and in the final for the fourth time in six years, had a hard time possessing the ball in the first half. Overall, it didn’t have a shot on goal for the entire match.

Meyer and company credited the defense, like they have all season long, picking up their 13th shutout.

“It’s our strongest point and we always start every play from the back and build up,” senior defender Sydney Mammoser said. “It feels so good especially since it’s an undefeated season.”

Coming into the second half, Faith had some nerves, but it finally found the back of the net in the 62nd minute when SA Christian whiffed on a clear out attempt.

Severide stole the ball, dribbled twice and booted it from 25 yards out, hitting a defender’s head.

“Leading up to the game, it was important to us that we were going to pressure them right away on their bad touches,” Severide said. “They’re a good team and all their touches were really good so we had to take advantage when they had a bad touch.”

Three minutes later, Trueblood made it 2-0 in the 65th minute.

“Still under pressure. It was 1-0 with 15 minutes and we couldn’t let up,” she said. “I had a wide open shot and no one was around me so I had to take it.”
