Colleyville Heritage senior shortstop and Oklahoma signee Bobby Witt is 1 of 40 nominees up for the Golden Spikes award, which goes to the top amateur player in the country.

Witt, who’s projected to be a top 5 pick in this year’s MLB draft, can become the first high school player to win.

The nominees were announced by USA Baseball on Wednesday.

Witt and Lake Travis’ Brett Baty are the two high school players on this year’s watch list.

Bryce Harper won the award in 2010. Witt and Harper met when Witt won the high school home run derby during All-Star weekend last summer.

Others nominated include Southlake Carroll’s Matt Canterino (Rice), TCU’s Nick Lodolo and Keller’s Shea Langeliers (Baylor).

Witt went 2 for 4 with two doubles and two runs scored as Heritage defeated Boswell 10-0 on Tuesday. The Panthers are ranked No. 2 in 5A and own a record of 9-0 in district and 23-1 overall.
