TXHSFB Tuesday: Bowie QB sets AISD record while Missouri commit rushes for 509 yards
WEEK 3
1. What we noticed: Records broken
Shane Buechele was a standout quarterback at Arlington Lamar, who is now wearing the burnt orange jersey down in Austin for the Texas Longhorns. His Arlington ISD record of passing yards in a game (465 yards) had held up for the past four years.
That was, until Friday, when Arlington Bowie’s Malcolm Mays threw for a school district record 473 yards with four touchdowns on Thursday against Rockwall.
Mays connected with three different receivers for TD passes of 81, 80, 46 and 6 yards.
He broke the school record of 459 yards, which was held by Tony James (2014).
Fort Worth South Hills running back Anthony Watkins was nearing state record territory vs. Saginaw on Friday. The senior Missouri commit rushed for a Fort Worth ISD record 509 yards and nine touchdowns as the Scorpions won 63-41.
The previous TD mark was set by Southwest’s Robbie Rhodes (8). Watkins’ 509-yard performance was the 14th best all-time in state history. McKinney’s Matt Gadek set the mark with 599 yards last season.
2. Biggest Upset: Mansfield 14, Legacy 7
All seven of our “experts” took Legacy to beat the Tigers.
But behind running back Josh Littleberry, the Tigers bested the Broncos Friday at Newsom Stadium.
Littleberry rushed for 141 yards and one touchdown, and the defense held Legacy to 216 yards of total offense and 10 first downs.
The Broncos began the season in the Associated Press Class 5A top 10 and were still in the area’s top 10 rankings entering the week. Mansfield was unranked.
3. Best Win: North Side 53, Diamond Hill-Jarvis 21
The Steers seemed to be completely counted out as the Eagles were 2-0 and had their first winning streak since 1999.
But the Battle of the Boot stayed at NSHS as the Steers handled DHJ even after the Eagles led 7-0.
Isaak Rosales threw for 183 yards on 14 of 24 passing and two touchdowns. He also rushed for a 5-yard TD run. Freddy Rivera carried five times and scored twice while the defense forced seven turnovers as North Side picked up its first win of the year.
4. Best Offensive Performance:
QB Michael Black (Haltom): The senior accounted for 531 yards and 7 TDs in a 65-35 victory over Lake Highlands. Black threw for 361 yards and 5 TDs with no picks, and rushed 22 times for 170 yards with 2 TDs. Black has nearly 1,200 yards and 15 TDs in three games.
RB Watkins; Quintan Jackson (Benbrook): Watkins had a monster game and through three games, he’s rushed for 1,079 yards and 13 TDs. He’s averaging 360 yards per game and 10.7 per carry.
That man Q-Jackson is in the news again. He had another great week for the 3-0 Bobcats.
Jackson rushed for 348 yards and 6 TDs in a 57-9 victory over Krum. He’s up to 904 yards and 14 TDs through three weeks.
WR Decorian Mitchell (Haltom); Jahrad Taylor (Brewer): Mitchell and Black were unstoppable against Saginaw as the wideout finished with 11 catches for 271 yards and 3 TDs.
Mitchell caught TD passes of 61, 60 and 39 yards.
Taylor caught 16 passes for 212 yards and 2 TDs of 62 and 19 yards. The Bears trailed 13-0 vs. Arlington Heights before Taylor and QB Carson Ingram connected on a 62-yard TD with 1:01 left for a 31-27 win.
5. Best Defensive Performance: Tim Drysdale (Grapevine)
How about this for a stat line? Three interceptions, two pick-sixes and 11 tackles.
That’s what the Grapevine senior linebacker accomplished in a 56-21 win vs. Northwest. Drysdale ran back interceptions for 84 and 36 yards as the Mustangs improved to 3-0.
WEEK 4
1. Keep riding that Fort Worth train as Polytechnic, Benbrook and Western Hills all look to go to 4-0 on the season. The Parrots beat Jefferson 45-0 – they shut out their first opponent since 2011. The Bobcats, in their third year, matched their win total from the first two seasons combined. The Cougars beat Carrollton Turner 23-7 and are off to their best start since 2005.
2. Well deserved bye week for the Birdville Hawks, who improved to 3-0 with a 56-26 win vs. Weatherford. QB Stone Earle threw 4 TDs and RB Laderrious Mixon rushed for 310 yards and 4 TDs. The Hawks last started 3-0 in 2012 when they won their first 13 games and reached the state quarterfinals.
3. Arlington goes for THREE as the Colts take on Mesquite Horn. The Colts are 2-0 on the season and are coming off a bye. They started 3-0 last season. What does top 2020 star Jahari Rogers have in store for Week 4? Rogers, who recently picked up an offer from Baylor, has 814 yards of total offense and 10 TDs.
4. Can Week 4 produce more offensive juggernauts? Last week we saw 19 teams from Dallas-Fort Worth gain 500 or more yards. There were 13 QBs who threw for 300 yards, 13 WRs who recorded 150 yards and 12 RBs with 200 yards.
