Texas reigns supreme in USA Today volleyball rankings

Four teams from Texas cracked USA Today’s Super 25 on Wednesday, led by the area’s No. 1 team Byron Nelson.

The Bobcats, who started the season 23-0 with three tournament titles, are ranked No. 7. Nelson (27-1) won the Northwest ISD and Volleypalooza tournaments, and also won the Texan-Bobcat Showcase.

Nelson is led by LSU commit 2020 outside hitter Paige Flickinger and 2019 Harding middle blocker Kelli McKinnon. Flickinger has made three all-tournament teams. Top 2021 hitter Charitie Luper has helped the Bobcats with three MVP awards in the preseason.

Southlake Carroll is No. 13. The Dragons are 27-5.

Key members include 2019 TCU setter McKenzie Nichols, 2019 USC beach commit Harper Hallgren, 2020 middle Annabelle Smith and 2021 outside hitter Natalie Glenn.

Carroll is No. 4 in area 6A rankings. The Bobcats are No. 2 in the state per TGCA; Carroll is No. 8.

McKinney Boyd is the third team from Texas coming in at No. 21. The Broncos are No. 10 in the state and No. 8 in the area. The Broncos (24-6) came in second place during the Allen Texas Open and won the PSA Circle of Champions.

Senior setter Courtney Walters, who’s committed to UT-San Antonio, is a recent dfwVarsity volleyball player of the week after winning MVP honors at the PSA tournament.

Waxahachie is the final team coming in at No. 25. The Indians (27-4) came in third place at the Mansfield ISD tournament during the opening weekend of the season and runner-up to Nelson at Northwest ISD.

The Indians are the area’s No. 2 Class 6A team and No. 14 in the state.

Senior outside Audrey Nalls is a TCU commit and has made three all-tournament teams. She also made the USA Today ALL-USA volleyball preseason team. Senior libero and UTA commit Alli Wells was named defensive MVP at Northwest. Senior outside hitter Essence Clerkley is committed to Murray State.

USA Today also ranked teams by regions and Texas dominated Region 4, taking up all 10 spots. The region consist of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana.
