Mansfield Lake Ridge track and field standout Jasmine Moore has been named Gatorade Texas Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

"I was really happy because that was one of my goals this year," Moore said. "I'm very honored to have been chosen for such a prestigious award."

Moore, who has just finished her junior year, defended her Class 5A state title in the triple jump with a score of 45 feet and 4 3/4 inches, which would have been a state and national record, but the UIL announced that the wind reading was too high to make it official. Moore also won her third-straight title in the long jump and helped win a title on the 4x200 meter relay.

"This season has been really amazing. It feels good to see everything come together," Moore said. "It makes me even more excited for the future and senior year."

Moore made her second USA Track and Field team this summer where she won the gold medal in the triple jump at the Junior Outdoor Championships and silver in the long jump. She will compete at the IAAF World U20 Championships, July 10-15 in Tampere, Finland.

Previous Gatorade Texas Girls Track and Field Athletes of the Year include, Kynnedy Flannel (Alvin), Tonea Marshall (Seguin). Samantha Gonzalez (Creekview), Desiree Freier (Northwest), Alaysha Johnson (Spring), Shelbi Vaughan (Legacy), Jennifer Madu (Plano East), A'Lexus Brannon (Ozen Magnet), Chelsey Sveinsson (Greenhill), Donique' Flemings (Saginaw) and Erica Alexander (Clear Brook).

Moore, who has narrowed her college decision to Texas, Oregon, Georgia, Florida State, Southern Cal, LSU and Florida, has bigger goals for her senior season.

"The goal next year if I don't do it this season is to break the national record in the triple jump and win girls of the year for the whole sport just not in the state," she said.

Moore was invited to the Star Telegram's Tomlinson Honors earlier this month after being named Girls Track Player of the Year.
