BASEBALL/SOFTBALL Round-up: Arlington Heights and Richland take 1-0 leads

BASEBALL

Arlington Heights 6, Birdville 2

Jonathon Castillo threw five scoreless innings to lead the Yellow Jackets to a Game 1 road victory to start the baseball playoffs.

Game 2 is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Arlington Heights.

Wylan Kolts' one-out RBI single put Heights on the board in the top of the third. Marshall Rose's first of three RBIs extended the lead to 2-0.

The Yellow Jackets (21-6-1) went up 3-0 in the fifth with Rose's RBI single to center.

Birdville (13-14) scored twice in the bottom of the sixth highlighted by an RBI double from Bryce Chappell, who went 2 for 3 with two doubles.

Heights added three runs in the seventh. Rose drove in two runs and Luke Hawthorne added an RBI single. Castillo allowed three hits, one earned run and struck out three. Andres Rios struck out two in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Layne Young allowed four hits, two earned runs and struck out seven in five innings for the Hawks.

Richland 7, South Hills 1

The Rebels (22-7) scored all seven runs in the third inning to beat the Scorpions in Game 1 of their three-game bi-district series at South Hills.

Game 2 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Richland.

Grant Zwald, Connor O'Neal and Rylee Johnson combined for five hits and one unearned run from the mound.

Matt Makarwich hit a one-out two-run double and was followed by an RBI single from Colby Gray. Cameron Coffee's RBi double to left field came with two outs and he scored on an RBI single by Kevin Garcia.

South Hills (11-10-2) was led by Fabian Castro, who went 2 for 2, and Johbany Ortiz, who allowed four hits, no runs and struck out three batters in 4 1/3 innings of relief.

Eaton 2, Ryan 0

Riley Taylor threw a one-hitter and struck out eight as the Eagles took a 1-0 lead at home in their bi-district series with the Raiders.

Game 2 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Ryan.

Cade Winquest (UTA) hit a solo home run in the third and Colby Seltzer (Tarleton State) drove in a run in the fourth for Eaton (24-8-1).

The Raiders (8-15) left five runners on base.

Taylor hit a batter and walked two to load the bases in the top of the fourth, but the senior right hander struck out the side. He also struck out the final two batters.

SOFTBALL

Richland 3, Eaton 2

Henderson State signee Abbie Moore recorded two RBI doubles, and pitchers Makenzie Walters and Krystal Lindsey (Arkansas Tech) combined for a five-hitter as the Rebels won Game 1 of their best-of-three area round series at Richland.

Game 2 is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Eaton.

Moore's first double came with one out in the bottom of the first that drove in Lindsey. A two-out error by Eaton led to Richland's second run.

The Eagles (25-7) tied it up in the top of the third with Kenzlee Zaher's RBI double to center and an RBI sacrifice fly by Ashlyn Walker (West Texas A&M).

The Rebels (14-10) took the lead for good a half inning later with Moore's RBI double to center. She finished 3 for 3 while Lindsey went 2 for 3 with two runs scored.

Vivica Hernandez went 2 for 2 to lead Eaton. Maddy Wright (Abilene Christian) allowed seven hits, two earned runs and struck out five.

Ryan 13, Birdville 9

Henderson State commit Brianna Leeds went 3 for 5 and drove in four runs in Ryan's Game 1 win vs. the Hawks (13-14).

Game 2 is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Ryan.

After trailing 1-0 in the first, Ryan scored four times in the top of the second with two RBI singles by Katie Baeulmer and Harper Hughes, and an RBI double by Maryland commit Abby Buettner.

Birdville got within 4-3 in the third with back-to-back RBIs by Maygan Paul and Payton Walker.

The Raiders (31-3-1) scored five runs in the fifth and nine runs in the final three innings. Hughes drove in two runs and Cecily Rodriguez went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

Paul and Walker each drove in two runs, and Lencia Powell and Alicia Mora both went 3 for 4 with an RBI for the Hawks.

Flower Mound 8, Waco Midway 5

Jordan Lorenzini hit an inside the park grand slam in the fourth to highlight the Jaguars' win in Game 1 vs. Midway (22-6).

Michele Hollon added a two-run single in the first for the Jaguars (24-7-2) and Megan Lesko (East Central) recorded an RBI triple in the fifth.

Game 2 is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday at Cleburne. If needed Game 3 will follow.

Arlington Heights 7, Boswell 4

The Yellow Jackets (30-1-1) rallied from a three-run deficit to win Game 1 of their area round series with the Pioneers (26-4-1).

Game 2 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at North Crowley.
