Texas Longhorns AD Chris Del Conte chronicles ‘epic road trip’ after flight delays
College students are no stranger to last-minute road trips. But athletic directors?
That’s what University of Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte did when his flight to Milwaukee from Austin was delayed multiple times on Thursday. Del Conte was traveling to watch the Longhorns men’s basketball team on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
After the second delay, Del Conte, who was previously TCU’s AD, along with a father and son duo he met at the airport called an audible. They decided to drive to Milwaukee together. Road trip!
Del Conte chronicled the trip on social media, posting pictures of stops at Buc-ee’s, Choctaw Travel Plaza in Oklahoma, and a blurry image of the St. Louis arch from the interstate. The trio posted images from gas stations along the way, which included multiple bathroom breaks. In one post from the road, Del Conte needled his adult travel mate Wheels Smith for having “a bladder the size of a walnut.”
The trio spent the night in Springfield, Illinois, where Del Conte shared an image of his hotel room that included an oversized Jacuzzi tub near his bed. “This is a first,” Del Conte posted on Twitter.
Del Conte’s string of messages detailing the trip tickled fans and blew up on social media. The group made it to Milwaukee Friday morning.
“Epic road trip, my friend. Now let’s get a Dub,” Del Conte posted in a reply to Smith.
The six-seeded Longhorns (21-11) open against 11-seeded Virginia Tech (23-12) at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
