TCU men, women advance to second round of NCAA tennis tournament
The No. 4-ranked TCU men’s tennis team took care of business in workmanlike fashion Friday in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships.
The Horned Frogs cruised to a 4-0 victory over SWAC champion Jackson State at the Fort Worth Regional at TCU’s Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs (25-3), who reached the NCAA Final Four last year, advanced to the second round, where they will meet No. 36 LSU, which rallied for a 4-3 victory over No. 26 Rice after losing the doubles point and trailing by a set on four of six singles matches.
TCU lost only two games in winning the doubles point, then won the first set on all six singles courts before wins by Jerry Lopez, Cameron Norrie and Trey Daniels sealed the victory.
TCU women pull off upset
The No. 37-ranked TCU women advanced to the second round after a scrappy 4-3 victory over No. 29 Wichita State at the Miami Regional in Coral Gables, Fla.
The Frogs (16-6) lost the doubles point, but picked up singles victories by Caroline Wegner, Olaya Garrido-Rivas and Alexis Pereira to take a 3-1 lead. Wichita State then won two singles matches to even the overall score 3-3 before TCU senior Seda Arantekin won the deciding match on Court 1 with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory over Gabriela Porubin to snap the Shockers’ 17-match winning streak.
The TCU women meet No. 7 Miami in a second-round match at 10 a.m. today. The Hurricanes (20-5) picked up a 5-0 victory over Quinnipiac to advance.
UTA men fall to OU
In other NCAA men’s action Friday, UT Arlington lost to No. 10 Oklahoma 4-0 at the Norman Regional. The Mavericks’ lone highlight was turned in by Carlos Abiza and Mauricio Del Rio, who picked up a 6-4 victory over Alex Ghilea and Spencer Papa on Court 2 in doubles, before Oklahoma won the doubles point by winning the other two doubles matches.
