Fifth-inning solo home run helps UT Arlington win series opener
Colton Turner hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to break a tie and send UT Arlington to a 4-3 victory over Appalachian State in the first game of a Sun Belt Conference weekend series on Friday night.
Mavericks starting pitcher Kadon Simmons bounced back from a rough first inning to nearly pitch a complete game. Simmons ran his record to 9-4 by giving up seven hits and three runs in 8 1/3 innings.
Simmons gave up a solo home run to the second batter he faced, then gave up two singles and a two-run double as UTA (26-24, 12-13 Sun Belt) fell behind 3-0.
But the Mavs came back with three runs in the second.
Quintin Rohrbaugh and Turner singled. Christian Hollie walked to load the bases. Cody Farrell was hit by a pitch to bring in one run, Josh Minjarez hit a sacrifice fly and Matt McLean singled to tie the game 3-3, setting up Turner’s fifth-inning heroics.
