Exclusive: TCU football makes strong impression on four-star state champ recruit

TCU football hosted some of its top recruiting targets for official visits last weekend, including four-star athlete Hunter Haug.

Haug helped lead Smithson Valley to the Class 5A Division I state championship in December and is ranked the No. 216 prospect nationally in the 247Sports composite rankings.

Haug said the Horned Frogs made a strong impression on him.

“I loved it there,” Haug said Sunday. “I loved talking to the players and getting a sense of what it’s like to be coached by the staff.”

Haug was a jack of all trades for Smithson Valley as a junior, totaling 2,053 all-purpose yards, including 1,156 receiving yards and 16 total touchdowns. On defense he produced 57 tackles, an interception, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Haug could play on offense or defense at the next level. He feels his strengths are his processing ability with how he’s able to take in information and then apply it on the field.

“I don’t have a preferred position,” Haug said. “But I am getting recruited primarily by TCU at boundary safety.”

Haug said he’s formed a strong bond with TCU safeties coach Tre Watson and assistant Julius Lewis.

Haug declined to list his top schools after the visit, but the Horned Frogs remain in good position as one of the few schools to get him on campus for an official visit.

According to 247, Haug has visits scheduled to Arkansas, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech this month before making a decision on his recruitment.

“I will commit probably sometime in July, definitely before the season starts,” Haug said.

As he enters the final stages of his recruitment, Haug has a set of boxes a school has to check to land his commitment.

“To me the biggest things are the opportunity to develop and play,” Haug said. “On top of that, my relationship with the coaches and the fit at the school.”

Watson has a strong track record of producing NFL talent, including Bud Clark, who was selected in the second round of the NFL draft by Seattle in April.

Senior safety Jamel Johnson was second-team All-Big 12 and has a strong shot of being drafted next spring.

TCU’s recruiting class currently ranks No. 71 nationally and No. 15 in the Big 12, but the Horned Frogs have the second-fewest commitments with just four. Only Utah has fewer.

Expect the commitments to start rolling this summer. TCU recently added three-star Crowley offensive lineman Alexander Herrera on Friday.
