Massive upset gives TCU women surprise opponent for Sweet 16 — time, TV set

A major upset in the NCAA Tournament has significantly impacted TCU women’s basketball’s path to a Final Four.

The No. 3 seed Horned Frogs (31-5) will face No. 10 seed Virginia (22-11) at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the Sweet 16 in Sacramento, California, after the Cavaliers upset No. 2 Iowa 83-75 in double overtime on Monday.

The Horned Frogs narrowly avoided a similar fate late Sunday when they pulled off a second-half comeback to defeat No. 6 seed Washington 62-59 in overtime at Schollmaier Arena.

It’s the second straight appearance in the Sweet 16 for the Horned Frogs after last year’s run to the Elite Eight. It will be the Cavaliers’ first trip to the second weekend since 2000. Virginia’s last tournament appearance was in 2018.

The Cavaliers are the only double-digit seed left in the tournament after beating the Hawkeyes as 13.5-point underdogs Monday. Virginia had to win a First Four game 77-75 over Arizona State just to advance to the first round, then defeated No. 7 seed Georgia 82-73.

No. 1 South Carolina (33-3) will face No. 4 Oklahoma (26-7) in the other Sacramento 4 regional semifinal. The Gamecocks crushed No. 9 USC 101-61 on Monday, while the Sonners held off No. 5 Michigan State 77-71 on Sunday.
