No. 8 TCU women’s basketball rolled to its second straight win in Mexico with an 82-61 blowout of UAB on Friday night in the Cancun Challenge.
The Horned Frogs had one of the nation’s best trios last season with Hailey Van Lith, Sedona Prince and Madison Conner. A new “big three” is beginning to emerge for TCU (8-0) this season, as Olivia Miles, Marta Suarez and Donovyn Hunter combined for 51 points in the win over the Blazers.
The Blazers (3-4) hung around for about two quarters, trailing only 32-23 with 5:41 remaining the second, but the Horned Frogs quickly put the game away with an 11-2 run to enter halftime ahead 43-25.
Miles and Suarez sparked the run as Miles found Suarez for an open 3-pointer. Miles would later find Hunter for an open 3, and TCU led by double digits the rest of the way.
The Horned Frogs also defeated defending Atlantic 10 champion Richmond 68-52 on Thursday in the challenge, picking up a sneaky good win for their NCAA Tournament resume.
TCU knew what it was getting with Miles, as she continues to look like the nation’s best point guard with 18 points and six assists against UAB, but the continued emergence of Suarez has been a pleasant surprise.
The Horned Frogs expected her to be productive, but the Cal transfer forward has played at an All-American level. Suarez scored 19 against UAB and 24 against Spiders (5-2). She has now scored at least 19 points in six straight games.
Hunter was a key cog on last year’s Elite Eight team as a defensive ace, but the Horned Frogs needed her to take a step as a scorer. She’s delivered by scoring double figures in each game this season, including 14 against the Blazers.
With most of the leg work done in the nonconference portion of their schedule, the Horned Frogs will have four games to continue to fine-tune things before their Big 12 opener against Kansas State on Dec. 20. TCU also has one more marquee nonconference game against Ohio State in the Coretta Scott King Classic on Jan. 19 in Newark, New Jersey.
The Horned Frogs will return to action against Incarnate World at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Schollmaier Arena.
