TCU basketball stuns defending national champion No. 10 Florida on Thanksgiving

TCU men’s basketball pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the college basketball season Thursday, taking down defending national champion and No. 10-ranked Florida 84-80 on Thanksgiving in the Rady Children’s Invitational in San Diego.

Brock Harding lifted TCU (4-2) to the massive win by knocking down a clutch bucket with 48 seconds left to break the 77-77 tie. The Horned Frogs had to hold on for another possession, and Gators forward Alex Condon missed a 3-point attempt to take the lead with 19 seconds remaining.

Harding hit five free throws in the final 13 seconds to ice the game for the Horned Frogs. He finished with 19 points and 12 assists.

It was TCU’s first nonconference win over a top-10 team since 1986 when the Horned Frogs beat No. 6 Oklahoma behind 28 points from now-TCU head coach Jamie Dixon.

TCU was an 11.5-point underdog and +550 on the money line, meaning bettors profited $550 on a $100 wager.

The Horned Frogs advance to face Wisconsin (5-1) in the championship game at 4:30 p.m. Friday on Fox. The Badgers rolled to a 104-83 win over Providence (4-3) on Thursday.

Thursday marked the second straight time the Horned Frogs had a top-10 team on the ropes after narrowly falling to then-No. 6 Michigan 67-63 on Nov. 14. But this time the Horned Frogs made sure not to let another elite team off the hook.

After trailing by 10 points at one point, the Horned Frogs led 77-74 with 2:43 remaining in the game after a strong defensive performance that held Florida (4-2) without a field goal for over three minutes.

But TCU couldn’t deliver the knockout blow, leaving the door open for Florida guard Boogie Fland to tie the game at 77 with 1:34 remaining.

Sophomore forwards Jace Posey and David Punch led the comeback, along with Harding’s playmaking.

Posey scored 13 points during a seven-minute stretch, including a dunk and three-point play. While Florida had the advantage with its size, TCU was able to make it a game with its speed as Posey and the rest of the Horned Frogs flourished in transition. Posey led TCU with 21 points in 21 minutes off the bench.

But the Gators showed why they’re considered a Final Four contender as they slowed the game down. Urban Klavzar led a 7-0 run as Florida retook the lead at 74-68 with 5:29 remaining.

Punch had arguably the best game of his young career with 19 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. He scored two straight buckets to launch a 9-0 run that helped TCU retake control of the game.

The performance in San Diego is further confirmation of how much the Horned Frogs have improved since their season-opening loss to New Orleans.
