TCU men’s basketball will spend Thanksgiving weekend in San Diego, as the Horned Frogs have a chance to land two signature wins at the Rady Children’s Invitational.
TCU will face defending national champion No. 10 Florida in the opening round of the invitational at 2 p.m. Thursday on FS1. in what will be one of the Horned Frogs’ most challenging games of the season.
The Gators are off to a 4-1 start with wins over in-state rivals Florida State and Miami. Their lone loss came in a 93-87 thriller against No. 2 Arizona led by freshman standout Koa Peat.
Arizona was able to match the size of Florida’s elite front court and that will be the biggest challenge for TCU. The Gators are led by the 6-foot-11 Alex Condon (17.2 ppg, 9.0 rpg), 6-9 Thomas Haugh (17.8 ppg, 7.2 rpg) and 6-10 center Rueben Chinyelu (10.4 ppg, 11.4 rpg).
The Gators may have a better frontline than Michigan, which pounded TCU on the glass with a 42-20 advantage in a comeback 67-63 win over the Horned Frogs on Nov. 14.
TCU’s starting frontcourt of Xavier Edmonds and David Punch are skilled, but they stand at 6-8 and 6-7, respectively. They’ll have their hands full and TCU will need its wings like Jace Posey and Micah Robinson to make an impact on the glass.
The Gators did lose most of their guards from last season, but replaced them with two of the top transfer portal guards in Boogie Fland (Arkansas) and Xavian Lee (Princeton).
Fland is averaging 10.4 points per game, but is shooting below 40% from the field while Lee has struggled with the jump up in competition. After averaging 16.9 points last season, Lee is averaging just 7.8 with the Gators and shooting 22.6% on the season.
TCU guards Brock Harding and Jayden Pierre could end up being the key to TCU pulling off the upset.
Depending on the outcome of Thursday’s game, TCU will face Wisconsin or Providence on Friday. The Badgers started the season ranked No. 25, but fell out of the rankings after losing to BYU. Wisconsin is still 4-1 on the season.
The Friars are 4-2 with a win over Penn State, but losses to Colorado and Virginia Tech.
