Future TCU quarterback to play for Texas state championship on Thursday night
The Texas state football championships are off and rolling at AT&T Stadium this week, as champions will be crowned in 12 different classifications beginning on Wednesday with Jayton (1A-Division II), Gordon (1A-Division I) and Muenster (2A-Division II) pulling out victories and ending on Saturday night when North Crowley will look to take the 6A Division I crown for its first state championship since 2003.
For TCU fans, all eyes will be on Thursday night’s matchup when undefeated Malakoff (15-0) will take on a Columbus (14-1) squad led by the Horned Frogs’ class of 2025 quarterback signee Adam Schobel for the 3A-Division I state championship.
Schobel, who committed to TCU in July and officially signed with the program earlier this month, is seeking his first state championship after a senior season that has seen him throw for 3,473 yards and 53 touchdowns while rushing for 538 yards and 12 more scores. His stellar play has the Cardinals knocking on the doorstep of their first state championship in school history and has his name among 10 finalists for Mr. Texas Football.
It’s been a family affair for Schobel, as his first cousin, John, is also signed to TCU as a three-star linebacker recruit. Adam’s father, Matt, played for TCU as a tight end from 1998-2001 before playing seven seasons in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles. He is also the head coach for Columbus. Adam’s uncle, Aaron, also played for TCU from 1997-2000 before playing nine seasons in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills.
Schobel is the fourth-highest ranked quarterback to sign with TCU in the modern recruiting era, according to 247Sports. He is ranked as the No. 16 quarterback in the country and the No. 32 recruit from the state of Texas. He is the No. 200 overall recruit in the country. He is part of a 2025 recruiting class for Sonny Dykes and TCU that finished first in the Big 12.
His final high school game will kick off at 7 p.m. CST at AT&T Stadium in Arlington and will be streamed on FanDuel Sports Network.
