TCU baseball sweeps KU Jayhawks. Will it be enough to repeat as Big 12 champs?
The TCU baseball team might have done enough to repeat as Big 12 regular-season champions this weekend. Or the Frogs might fall just short.
TCU finished Big 12 regular-season play by sweeping the Kansas Jayhawks with an 8-2 victory on Sunday, going 16-8 in league games. But Texas Tech, which sits at 14-7 in league play, has a chance to win the outright title if it sweeps Oklahoma next weekend in Lubbock.
The Frogs appear in decent position for a possible share of the Big 12 title. OU and Oklahoma State — both sitting at 13-8 going into the final weekend — also have a chance to reach the 16-win mark in league play. Oklahoma State closes out its season with a three-game series at Baylor next weekend.
At worst, TCU has secured one of the top three seeds in the Big 12 tournament at Globe Life Field. At best, the Frogs will be the top-seed once again with hopes of winning the conference tournament title for a second straight year.
TCU (32-18, 16-8 Big 12), which checked in at No. 24 in the latest D1Baseball.com Top 25 poll, has momentum on its side going into the final week of the regular season. The Frogs are riding a four-game winning streak and just outscored the Jayhawks by a combined score of 53-11 over three days.
Brayden Taylor and Kurtis Byrne both homered for the Frogs on Sunday. TCU starter Riley Cornelio returned to the rotation, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits over 4 1/3 innings. And the bullpen used four relievers to close it out with 4 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.
Schedule update
TCU canceled its game against Tarleton State scheduled for Tuesday night, the school announced Sunday evening.
So the Frogs have only three games remaining on their regular-season schedule: a series against Santa Clara starting Thursday night at Lupton Stadium.
Fans who have tickets to the Tarleton game may exchange them, based on availability, for tickets to one of the three upcoming games with Santa Clara.
Boyers honored
TCU outfielder Luke Boyers was named a co-player of the week by the Big 12 on Monday. Boyers hit .412 with eight RBIs and six runs scored in the sweep over Kansas.
It’s the first weekly honor for Boyers. Frogs third baseman Brayden Taylor earned player of the week honors Feb. 21, while Riley Cornelio was the conference’s pitcher of the week March 21.
Other players honored by the league included Oklahoma’s Brett Squires (co-player), Baylor’s Jake Jackson (pitcher) and Texas Tech’s Owen Washburn (newcomer).
