TCU baseball has record-setting 30-3 victory over Kansas Jayhawks

Seven runs in the first inning. Seven more in the seventh. Throw in two five-run innings, a four-run inning and a two-run inning and TCU baseball made history on Saturday afternoon in Lawrence, Kansas.

The Horned Frogs rounded the bases at a dizzying pace, rolling to a 30-3 victory over the Kansas Jayhawks. The 30 runs tied the program-record for most in a game, which had been done once before against Louisville in 2003.

It’s more of a football score than a baseball score. However, it’s worth noting that TCU’s football program hasn’t reached the 30-point mark in half of its games against KU since joining the Big 12 in 2012. The Frogs just surpassed the 30-point mark against the Jayhawks on the football field last season, holding on for a 31-28 victory.

But Saturday was about baseball and the most unlikely star. Outfielder Porter Brown started the day as the nine-hole hitter and ended it in the TCU record books. Brown had a program-record 10 RBIs on the day, highlighted by two home runs.

Brown, who entered the game with five RBIs on the season, finished 4-for-5 at the plate. The 10 RBIs broke Royce Huffman’s record of eight RBIs in a game set against San Diego State on April 18, 1998.

Brayden Taylor, Brody Green and Gray Rodgers also went deep for TCU on the day. Rodgers finished the day with seven RBIs.

The Frogs had quality pitching, too. Starter Marcelo Perez allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings. Tommy Vail, Connor Oliver and Gray Thomas combined for three scoreless innings of relief.

TCU (31-18, 15-8 Big 12) is now riding a three-game winning streak, winning its first two games over KU by a combined score of 45-9. The Frogs will go for the sweep over the Jayhawks on Sunday afternoon.

TCU right-hander Riley Cornelio is expected to return to the rotation for the start. Cornelio missed his last start due to injury but had a successful bullpen session on Thursday.
