Former Texas linebacker Terrence Cooks joining TCU football through transfer portal

TCU football has landed its first player from the NCAA transfer portal in the Sonny Dykes era.

Former Texas linebacker Terrence Cooks II announced that he will be playing for TCU next season. Cooks had a number of schools interested in him, including Ole Miss.

Cooks joins a program that is transitioning from a 4-2-5 defense under Gary Patterson to a 3-3-5 scheme under new defensive coordinator Joseph Gillespie. He is expected to join a linebacker corps that includes returners in Dee Winters, Jamoi Hodge, Wyatt Harris and Shadrach Banks.

TCU’s coaching staff views Cooks as a versatile linebacker who could play any spot. He is listed at 6-foot-2, 218 pounds and was a highly-rated prospect coming out of Pearland Shadow Creek. He was a consensus four-star prospect who had more than 40 offers including Alabama, Arizona, TCU, Auburn and Georgia.

He landed at Texas but had a limited role as a true freshman. Cooks was a third-string linebacker and appeared in only one game (Rice) this season. He didn’t record any statistics.

Dykes and the new staff have been busy assembling the 2022 recruiting class and evaluating players in the NCAA transfer portal since formally taking over on Nov. 30. The early signing period starts Wednesday.

DT is USC bound

Former TCU defensive tackle Earl Barquet is heading to USC.

Barquet is the second Horned Frog in as many offseasons to head to Southern California. Running back Darwin Barlow bolted for the Trojans last offseason.

Barquet entered the transfer portal last week after spending three seasons in TCU’s program. He had 12 tackles in 10 games as a sophomore for the Frogs last season. Barquet redshirted in 2019 and had 2 1/2 sacks in six games as a redshirt freshman in 2020.
