TCU football wasn’t the ‘best fit’ for QB Quinn Ewers, Sonny Dykes says

Quinn Ewers is headed to Texas, after all.

Ewers made it official that he’d be playing for the Longhorns on Sunday night. That’s where most felt Ewers would end up once the former five-star quarterback entered the NCAA transfer portal after one season at Ohio State.

TCU, though, had a chance to make a pitch to the Southlake Carroll product last week, but did so without head coach Sonny Dykes.

Dykes didn’t attend the meeting with Ewers due to a prior recruiting obligation, letting other members of his staff talk with Ewers and his family about TCU and the vision of the program under a new staff.

“I had a recruiting obligation I had to be at. It was really the only time they could schedule it,” Dykes said. “They met with a number of coaches. Based on conversations, we just felt it was a better fit somewhere else.”

Not having Dykes attend the meeting could be viewed as odd to outsiders. Ewers was the nation’s No. 1-ranked recruit for 2021 and Dykes is known for his ability to develop quarterbacks.

Among those who played under Dykes include Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff, the top overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft coming out of Cal.

But Dykes sounds comfortable with what TCU’s quarterback room will look like in the coming years. Max Duggan and Chandler Morris are expected to stay with the program, and Dykes has shown a knack for landing quarterbacks in the portal such as the quarterbacks he coached at SMU including Shane Buechele (Texas) and Tanner Mordecai (Oklahoma).

Ewers will not join that list but others might.

As Dykes said of Ewers, “We just didn’t think it was a good fit.”

Still, the portal has plenty of QB talent in it and TCU is evaluating it constantly. USC’s Kedon Slovis, Texas A&M’s Zach Calzada and Auburn’s Bo Nix became the latest quarterbacks to enter the portal on Monday. More will likely follow.

In the meantime, Dykes and his staff continue building the 2022 recruiting class.

More commits

TCU has added a couple commits to its 2022 recruiting class in recent days.

Defensive back Kyron Chambers out of Dallas’ South Oak Cliff announced his intentions to play for the Frogs on Sunday, and defensive lineman Paul Oyewale out of Houston’s Langham Creek announced his commitment on Monday.

Chambers and Oyewale are both rated as three-star prospects by 247Sports.

TCU now has the 63rd-ranked class in the country, according to 247Sports.
