TCU’s Wallow named to Butkus Award watch list; Moehrig lands on Thorpe Award’s list
TCU linebacker Garret Wallow added another preseason accolade on Monday.
Wallow has been named to the watch list for the Butkus Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top linebacker. Wallow is also on the watch lists for the Lott IMPACT Trophy and Bednarik Award, and has been named a preseason All-American and preseason All-Big 12.
Wallow is coming off a stellar junior season, posting a Big 12-leading 125 tackles in 2019. He was named first-team All-Big 12 and honorable mention Big 12 defensive player of the year.
Along with his 125 tackles, Wallow also had 18 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks last season.
The Butkus Award is named after Dick Butkus, the Pro Football Hall of Famer and Chicago Bears legend. The last Big 12 player to win the award was Texas A&M’s Von Miller in 2010. TCU has never produced a Butkus Award winner.
Other notable linebackers on the watch list include Baylor’s Terrel Bernard; Texas A&M’s Anthony Hines and Buddy Johnson; Texas Tech’s Riko Jeffers; Texas’ Joseph Ossai; Oklahoma’s DaShaun White; Oklahoma State’s Amen Ogbongbemiga and Malcolm Rodriguez; and Iowa State’s Mike Rose.
Thorpe Award eyeing Moehrig
TCU safety Trevon Moehrig also landed on a watch list Monday, being named to the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s top defensive back. Moehrig has received a number of preseason accolades, including multiple preseason All-America teams and preseason All-Big 12.
Moehrig is coming off a sophomore season in which he had 62 tackles, four interceptions and 11 pass breakups. He was a first-team All-Big 12 selection and rated as the nation’s top safety by Pro Football Focus.
