Former TCU QB Justin Rogers hoping to hit jackpot at new school

Former TCU quarterback Justin Rogers will continue his playing days at UNLV.

Rogers announced his decision on Twitter on Tuesday night, writing: “Las Vegas, Nevada. Committed and enrolled.”

Rogers is expected to seek an immediate eligibility waiver to become eligible for the 2020 season. He would be entering his redshirt sophomore season in 2020.

If granted a waiver, he’d be eligible for the next three seasons. If declined, he’d be eligible for the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

Rogers’ TCU career did not go according to plan after he became the highest-rated prospect to sign in program history as part of the 2018 class. Rogers sustained a significant setback following a severe knee injury during his senior year in high school in 2017, and then battled a drop-foot condition.

All of it slowed Rogers’ development at TCU. He saw the field for just one series in the 2018 Cheez-It Bowl, and then was passed by freshman Max Duggan on the depth chart in 2019.

Rogers also wasn’t on the travel squad for a couple games last season and eventually put his name in the NCAA’s transfer portal.

In announcing his decision to transfer, Rogers said: “I know that God didn’t bless me with gifts and talent for them to lie dormant.”

At UNLV, Rogers goes down a level to the Mountain West and will have an opportunity to showcase his skills in front of a new coaching staff.

The Rebels are now led by Marcus Arroyo, who previously served as Oregon’s offensive coordinator.
