TCU loses in first-round baseball regional to USC
Cold bats and free passes proved fatal for the TCU Horned Frogs in a 13-1 loss to the Southern California Trojans in the opener of the Corvallis Regional.
The Horned Frogs lineup had just five hits and committed two errors while the pitching staff walked nine and hit four more in the rout.
USC advanced to the winner’s bracket where they will face the winner of Oregon State and Saint Mary’s Saturday evening. TCU will hope to survive and advance against the loser of the Oregon State-St. Mary’s game Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Trojans chased TCU starter Tommy LaPourin the fourth inning when he hit the leadoff man for the second inning in a row in the and allowed two more singles to load the bases with no outs.
The Wichita State transfer’s final line of six hits, three earned runs, a walk and five strikeouts contrasted with his previous appearance in the Big 12 tournament against Houston where he completed six innings of one-run ball.
At the plate, the TCU offense was stifled by senior righthander Caden Aoki, who earned all-Big Ten honors this season. Aoki went eight innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out six.
Four Trojans had multi-hit games. First baseman Adrian Lopez led the scoring with three RBIs. USC extended the lead in the fourth on an RBI bunt and a fielder’s choice to make it 3-0
The Horned Frogs countered with their only run in the bottom of the fourth on Sawyer Stonsnider’s solo home run.
USC blew the game open in the fifth, scoring three runs on four-straight singles to make it 6-1.
USC tacked on four more runs in the ninth without recording a single hit in the inning after three-straight walks, HBP, a passed ball, and another walk. Thirteen runs is the most TCU has allowed since a 26-9 loss against Arizona State during the regular season.
TCU allowed the Trojans to get the leadoff man on base in all but two innings, while they failed to do so in any frame.
The Horned Frogs fell to 39-13, USC improved to 36-21.
