TCU baseball lands in the Corvallis regional for the NCAA Tournament

TCU baseball landed in the Corvallis regional for the NCAA Tournament, the school learned Monday during the NCAA selection show.

The Horned Frogs earned the No. 2 seed in the region that includes No. 1 Oregon State, No. 3 USC and No. 4 Saint Mary’s.

It marks a return to the tournament after the Horned Frogs narrowly missed last year and TCU will have plenty of motivation to make a deep postseason.

Despite making it to the Big 12 tournament final and falling in a close 2-1 battle to Arizona, the Horned Frogs didn’t earn a hosting seed despite an impressive resume.

Was TCU snubbed? The data presents a strong case that the Horned Frogs were. TCU had more Quad 1 and Quad 2 wins than 12 of the 16 hosting teams.

TCU’s non-conference schedule ranked inside the top 15 thanks in large part to the Horned Frogs only playing seven Quad 4 opponents. Quad 4 is considered the weakest tier of teams with Q1 being the best teams and Q2 being a tier below. Southern Miss for example had multiple Q4 losses but were still selected as a host seed over TCU.

The Horned Frogs also won 21 games in the Big 12, the third-highest rated league in the country while teams like Tennessee which struggled during conference play in the SEC.

TCU was ambitious in its scheduling and most importantly did a lot of winning against one of the nation’s toughest slates, but it wasn’t enough to sway a committee that selected eight SEC teams to host.

While there will still be some frustration over the snub, the Horned Frogs will now turn their attention to trying to make it out the Corvallis regional.

TCU’s first game will be against USC on Friday at 2 p.m. CT (ESPNU).
