An arctic front will arrive in North Texas on Tuesday, bringing freezing rain, frigid temperatures and possibly sub-zero wind chills to the region.

A winter weather advisory for parts of the Metroplex, including Tarrant and Dallas counties, will go into effect at 5 p.m. and last until midnight, according to the National Weather Service Fort Worth.

Light drizzle will continue through Tuesday morning, with occasional showers likely throughout the day. The arctic front will start moving over North and Central Texas in the afternoon and evening hours.

There’s a chance for freezing rain in the Metroplex as the front arrives later Tuesday, however, ice accumulations and traffic impacts are expected to be minimal, according to the NWS. The biggest areas to watch for are bridges, overpasses and untreated roads.

The Texas Department of Transportation is closing all its managed TEXpress lanes on Tuesday afternoon due to the winter weather, according to a department social media post.

The arctic front will also bring “extremely cold” temperatures to North Texas over the next few days.

Temperatures will begin dropping by midday Tuesday as the front moves in, with much of the Metroplex not expected to rise above freezing until Friday, according to the NWS.

An extreme cold warning and cold weather advisory will go into effect late Tuesday through Thursday morning.

Daily highs will be in the upper 40s Tuesday and drop into the 10s overnight. Temperatures on Wednesday morning will be between the single digits to low 20s, with wind chills ranging from -10 to 10 degrees, according to the NWS.

Highs will be in the 30s Wednesday, followed by another chilly night with temperatures in the 10s. Thursday morning will also be frigid, with temperatures ranging from single digits to low 20s and wind chills from -10 to 10 degrees.

Conditions on Wednesday and Thursday mornings will be life-threatening for unsheltered or marginally sheltered populations, according to the NWS. Several emergency shelters are open this week for individuals or families needing warmth.

During winter weather, the NWS reminds folks to protect the four P’s: people, plants, pets and pipes.
