Joann plans to close more than 500 stores, including these Texas locations

Joann Craft Store plans to close more than 500 retail locations, including 18 in Texas, after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January.

The Hudson, Ohio-based company has 800 stores across the U.S., including 43 in Texas.

This is the company’s second filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy within a year; the first filing was in March 2024. Joann has reported between $1-$10 billion in debt, according to CBS News.

According to court filings from Joann, the company credits their losses to the high prices of shipping products overseas and a faltering customer base.

“This was a very difficult decision to make, given the major impact we know it will have on our Team Members, our customers and all of the communities we serve,” a spokesperson for Joann wrote in a Wednesday news release.

The court hearing to approve store closings will take place on Feb. 14. If approved, store closing sales will begin Feb. 15 and will continue until supplies run out.

What does this mean for Joann customers?

Not much will change for Joann customers.

The only thing to note is that right now the company is not accepting gift cards online. However, gift cards are still eligible to use in stores, including those that are planned to close.

Locations that close will only have inventory that is already on site listed at special prices. Online orders will continue to be fulfilled and shipped as normal. Joann will also continue to accept returns.

The bigger picture

Joann is not the only major retail company dealing with Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

In November 2024, Spirit Airlines filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Then in December 2024, Party City and Container Store announced the same. Macy’s also filed for Chapter 11 this year.
