This North Texas city is one of the worst for termites. How to check your home for these tiny bugs

Did you know Dallas is one of the worst cities in the country for termite infestations? Our neighbors to the east made Orkin Pest Control’s top 10 list for cities with the most termite damage (they were No. 10 on the list).

You can thank the Formosan Subterranean termite breed for that stat. These creepy-crawlies are ruthless because they reproduce like crazy, which also makes them feed on wood at a faster rate, according to Texas A&M Entomology. They can populate up to millions in your home.

Texas A&M also reports that this breed is present in both Tarrant and Dallas county. And while termites can be in your home during any time of the year, homeowners should pay extra attention in the spring, as it is their “swarm season” from March to April.

Formosan Subterranean termites are small in size, about a half an inch in length. There are three types of this breed in a colony: workers (which are off-white in color), soldiers (which have tear-dropped or egg-shaped heads) and swarmers (which are yellowish-brown with wings).

Termites can feed on your home for years before you notice. Their work is awfully subtle. Luckily, a few local pest controls gave the Star-Telegram their expert insight on the matter, so homeowners can take the proper precautions to avoid an economic disaster before the termites’ busy season.

How do I know if my home has termites?

Texas Bug Slayers and Ideal Partner Pest Control says you will notice these traits if termites infested your home:

  • Mud tubes along the home foundation: These are the width of a pencil and can be found along walls, ceilings or floors. They are used by termites to travel from colony to colony.

  • Discarded wings: Termite wings are transparent and sometimes hairy, according to Texas A&M. However, if you find wings around your doors or windows, it is a sign that a colony may be nearby.

  • Hollow-sounding or damaged wood: Decaying wood is sometimes hidden by paint. A good way to know if your wood is hollow is by tapping on it and listening.

  • Tight-fitting doors or windows: Since termites eat wood and create moisture, it can cause warping.

  • Swarming: Termites that are reproducing can be found on window sills or attracted to lights. If there are termites hanging out around your house that is a huge indicator you need to call for an inspection.

  • Dirt: if you notice any dirt coming through the sheetrock, that is typically a sign of termites.

What should I do if I notice termites in my home?

If you notice termites in your home, you cannot handle it by yourself. Unfortunately, that is the most devastating part about termites: They are a costly pain in the butt.

“If you see signs of termites, don’t disturb them — this can cause the colony to scatter and make treatment more difficult,” says Tina Vasquez from Texas Bug Slayers. “Avoid using over-the-counter sprays, as these only kill visible termites and won’t eliminate the source.”

When pest control does come, their plan of action will depend on the damage done. Options include liquid barrier, bait stations or a targeted spot treatment. What matters is acting as soon as you notice termite damage. Time plays a part.

What can homeowners do to prevent termites?

While creepy crawlers seeping in your home can be inevitable, there are a few precautionary tips Ideal Partners gives homeowners.

  • Ensure you have no leaking pipes, faucets or gutters. Eliminating moisture is key to keeping termites out.

  • Keep firewood and mulch at least 15 feet away from the home.

  • Make sure that you can see 2-4 inches of foundation below the brick line.

  • Ensure cracks and crevices around the foundation and siding are completely sealed.

  • All Texas homes are at risk, especially in Tarrant County. Schedule annual termite inspections to ensure minimal damage. Ideal Partners Pest Control conducts inspections for free.

  • “For those building or renovating, using termite-resistant materials or treating wood before construction can provide extra protection,” suggests Vasquez.
