North Texas road conditions: Drivers urged to use caution, watch for black ice Friday
Additional ice could accumulate on North Texas roads from drizzle this morning or from melted snow that refreezes into black ice. Drivers are urged to use caution Friday.
Residents who need to travel in the next couple of days can check for updates on road conditions online using TxDOT’s map of statewide road conditions at drivetexas.org.
Texas Department of Transportation crews were active throughout the night, according to Fort Worth district spokesperson Val Lopez. Roads are wet and slushy in some areas, but overall traffic is flowing well, Lopez said shortly before 5 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10.
But travel is expected to be hazardous in parts of the region early Friday as some roads will remain icy, the National Weather Service said. Most untreated roads will be difficult to use, along with bridges and overpasses.
As of noon Friday, TxDOT’s map showed most major roads north of Fort Worth and Dallas still had patches of ice and snow. In Fort Worth, highways on the north side of the city still looked icy, including Interstate 35W and Loop 820.
Road conditions will begin to improve by midday Friday as temperatures increase above freezing. However, anything that melts Friday is likely to refreeze overnight since temperatures will plunge into the 20s and teens, and black ice could be a danger, according to the NWS.
Friday will be mostly cloudy with highs in the mid to upper 30s.
