A 31-year-old man was shot and wounded by Fort Worth police after he fired at officers during a standoff with a SWAT team on Thursday night, Jan. 9, authorities said.

Officers responded to a domestic disturbance at a house in the 5600 block of Seafield Lane in northwest Fort Worth about 6:20 p.m. to investigate reports of shots fired inside the home, according to a statement from Fort Worth police.

The man’s girlfriend called police to report that he “had the gun to his chin like he wanted to shoot himself,” and that he was banging his head on the wall, according to police call logs. The man also had been drinking alcohol and had fired multiple gunshots, according to the girlfriend’s 911 call. The woman told police that the man had not hurt her and that she went to a neighbor’s house.

The call logs show SWAT responded to the home about 7:30 p.m.

Officers established a perimeter when they arrived on the scene and attempted to contact the man, according to a news release. They could hear additional gunshots coming from inside the house, police said.

The man came out of the residence and fired his weapon at the officers, according to police. Multiple officers returned fire, wounding the man.

Officers and MedStar personnel immediately rendered medical assistance to the suspect, and he was taken to a local hospital. He remained in critical condition Friday morning, police said.

The suspect has been identified as Cameron James Leverett. He faces three counts of assault against a public servant with a weapon, according to Fort Worth jail records.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

The investigation is ongoing and is being handled by the department’s Major Case Unit, according to the statement.

Officials with the Fort Worth Police Department said they will provide updates as information becomes available.
