Weather delays for Fort Worth/Tarrant County trash collection, government services & more
Some local governments and businesses are delaying or closing services due to a winter storm Thursday and Friday.
A mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain began falling Thursday morning, Jan. 9.
Here’s the latest from the city of Fort Worth and others across Tarrant County.
Fort Worth trash collection

The city’s drop-off stations closed at 3 p.m. Jan 9 and were anticipated to reopen for normal hours on Friday, Jan. 10, according to a page on the city’s website.
Yard waste collection is canceled for Jan. 9 and 10 so the city can focus more resources on trash and recycle pickup.
Any trash and recycling pickups not collected on Jan. 9 will be picked up on Jan. 10.
Jan. 10 collections are shifting to Jan. 11, according to the city’s website.
All collections should be back to normal by Monday, Jan. 13.
If you have a missed collection call 311 or report it on the city’s MyFW app.
Residents with collections on Jan. 9 have until 6 p.m. on Jan. 10 to report it. Residents with collections on Jan. 10 have until 4 p.m. on Jan. 11 to report it.
The city is encouraging residents to stay updated through the city’s social media channels, and solid waste department’s mobile app.
Fort Worth museums
The Fort Worth Aviation Museum is closed Thursday and Friday due to the inclement weather.
The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History and the Omni Theater will be closed Thursday and Friday due to the weather, museum officials announced Wednesday night.
The Kimbell Art Museum will also be closed and all museum activities canceled Thursday and Friday, museum officials said. The museum is expected reopen Saturday and resume all scheduled programming, officials said.
Fort Worth Zoo
The Fort Worth Zoo is closed on Friday, Jan. 10
Fort Worth Libraries
All Fort Worth library branches are closed Thursday, Jan. 9 due to the weather. All libraries will open at noon Friday, Jan. 10, except for Southwest Regional and Rise, which will remain closed.
Fort Worth Animal Care & Control
All city animal shelters will be closed Friday, Jan. 10 due to inclement weather.
Texas Department of Public Safety
The Athen, Bonham, Canton, Carrollton Mega Center, Carthage, Clarksville, Cleburne, Corsicana, Daingerfield, Dallas South Mega Center, Decatur, Denton, Emory, Flower Mound (Argyle), Fort Worth East, Fort Worth Mega Center, Fort Worth South, Gainesville, Garland Mega Center, Garland Regional, Gilmer, Grand Prairie, Greenville, Henderson, Hurst, Jacksonville, Kilgore,Lake Worth, Lewisville, Linden, Marshall, McKinney, Mineral Wells, Mount Pleasant, New Boston, Palestine, Paris, Plano, Quitman, Rockwall,Sherman, Stephenville, Sulphur Springs, Terrell, Texarkana, Tolar, Tyler, Waxahachie and Weatherford drivers license offices will be closed Thursday, Jan. 9 due to weather.
Meals on Wheels of Tarrant County
Meals on Wheels will not deliver meals on Friday and all of its adult activity centers will be closed due to unsafe driving conditions, officials said.
Meal delivery will resume as soon as it is safe to do so and clients have already received shelf-stable meals to keep on hand, according to a statement.
The non-profit anticipates to be back on its regular schedule by Jan. 13.
Officials with Meals on Wheels are reminding community members to check on their elderly or homebound neighbors.
Tarrant County offices
The county closed its offices at 3 p.m. on Jan. 9. All Tarrant County facilities will be closed Friday, Jan. 10, and are expected to resume normal business hours on Monday, Jan. 13, according to a notice on the county’s website.
All tax offices closed at 2 p.m. on Jan. 9. If you have a question about your property taxes you can email taxoffice@tarrantcountytx.gov. If you have a question about your motor vehicle taxes you can email mvt@tarrantcountytx.gov.
Arlington trash/recycling collection
Republic Services has announced it will only collect residential, commercial, and industrial garbage carts and containers in Arlington on Thursday, Jan. 9. This change in service is designed to allow drivers to safely finish their routes earlier in the day before street conditions are expected to deteriorate.
Residential recycling and bulk garbage will not occur on Thursday. This means Arlington residents who typically see recycling and bulk pickup on Thursdays do not need to place recycling carts, bagged leaves, or bulk items on the curb for collection until their next scheduled collection date, which is Thursday, Jan. 16.
There will be no collections on Friday, Jan. 10. Garbage collection will shift to Saturday, while recycling, leaves and bulk trash will get pushed back to Friday, Jan. 17. City of Arlington facilities, including City Hall, recreation centers, library locations, and the animal shelter, will be closed to the public until noon on Friday, Jan. 10. The city’s public transportation services, Handitran, Arlington On-Demand and Arlington RAPID, will resume at noon Friday, Jan. 10.
All essential City of Arlington services will be operational, including public safety, 9-1-1 emergency call center, street and water crews. This also includes the Action Center, the City’s information hotline that can be reached by dialing 817-459-6777.
Arlington residents are encouraged to check in with the city’s social media channels, and sign up for the CodeRED email and text notification system.
Keller trash/recycle collection
The city of Keller’s contractor, Community Waste Disposal, has canceled services for all its member cities on Jan. 10.
The city will update residents through social media, and other communication channels if service is impacted, however, Keller residents can also sign up to get weather alerts directly from Community Waste Disposal.
Keller city facilities
Keller’s town hall, public library, senior center and recreation center will have delayed openings on Jan. 10, weather permitting.
The Keller Pointe recreation center is scheduled to open at 8 a.m. on Jan. 10 followed by the library and senior center at 9:30 a.m. The city will post updates to its website and social media if anything changes.
Saginaw trash/recycling and municipal court
As of around 8 a.m. on Jan. 9, all trash and recycle collection in Saginaw should proceed as normal, according to a post on the city’s Facebook page.
“This does NOT mean there won’t be delays or cancellations,” the post cautioned. Saginaw’s trash contractor, Waste Management, is asking residents to not put out bulky items like mattresses and couches.
If anything changes with pickups, the city will update residents on its website and social media.
Court dates for Jan. 9 have been pushed back to Thursday, February 13. Residents can call 817-232-4640 for any questions about their municipal court dates.
Southlake trash/recycle collection
The city of Southlake also uses Community Waste Disposal, so services are canceled for Jan. 10.
Residents can sign up for alerts through the company.
Southlake Library & Nature Center
The library, nature center and all recreation centers and programs are closed Jan. 10 due to inclement weather.
Haltom City trash
Friday, Jan. 10 trash services is being pushed to Saturday, according to a post from the city’s Facebook page.
Hurst trash/recycle collection
The city’s contractor, Republic Services, is not running routes in Hurst on Jan. 9 due to expected sleet and snow. The contractor is also not running routes on Jan. 10, and normal services will resume next week, city officials said in a statement.
Mansfield trash/recycling
The city’s trash contractor, Frontier Waste Solutions, will not be running its routes on Jan. 10. Those impacted will have to wait for their next standard pick up day, according to a post on the city’s Facebook page.
Westworth Village
City hall will be closed until 10 a.m. on Jan. 10. The city’s trash and recycle services will also be delayed from Jan. 10 to Jan. 11.
White Settlement courts and trash
All court dates in White Settlement for Jan. 9 have been rescheduled to a later date, according to a post on the city’s Facebook page
In terms of trash pickup, the city’s contractor, Frontier Waste Solutions, was able to get most of Thursday’s collections done. The only streets missed were Grant Circle, Moran Street, Parkside Drive, South Redford, part of Joy Drive, part of Dale Court, Westlake Gardens and Bella Terra Apartments, according to a city Facebook post.
Residents are instructed to leave their cans out if their collection was missed, so the contractor can come pick them up on Jan. 10. Anything missed on Jan. 10 will be picked up on Jan. 11.
