Arctic air will arrive in Fort Worth by early next week.

Earlier this week, the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center released its 8-14 day weather outlook that is valid from Jan. 7-13, 2025. The outlook showed that much of the country would face subfreezing temperatures, with some states, including Texas, potentially receiving snow.

As the weekend and next week approaches, the local NWS office in Fort Worth has released a local outlook on the what’s coming to North Texas. Here’s what to know.

Mild weekend leading to colder weather next week

The first part of the weekend will be calm and mild, NWS lead meteorologist Steve Fano said.

A weak cold front will arrive in the region on Friday, Jan. 3, knocking temperatures down to right around 60 degrees. Similar temperatures are in the forecast on Saturday, Jan. 4, along with cloudy skies and no precipitation.

Around sunrise on Sunday, Jan. 5, a cold front will begin moving across North Texas, bringing low rain chances along the way, Fano said. By midday Sunday, the front will move out of the Metroplex and into East Texas.

Sunday daytime temperatures will be in the 60s and get colder heading into the evening hours and overnight, Fano said. Lows are likely to be in the 20s and could dip into the 10s along the Red River.

Arctic air and winter precipitation chances

After a taste of arctic air on Sunday evening, cooler temperatures will stick around into midweek.

High temperatures in the 40s and lows in the 20s will be the story from Monday, Jan. 6, to at least Wednesday, Jan. 8. Currently, there’s a low chance that North Texas could see precipitation early next week, but nothing is in the official forecast yet, Fano said.

As of right now, next week will be cold and dry. However, this a changing weather situation and folks should stay updated on the forecast as they go through the weekend, Fano said.

“We’re not too confident that we’ll see any appreciable precipitation next week,” Fano told the Star-Telegram.
