North Texans have felt hot and humid weather this month as temperatures reach highs in the upper to lower 90s, but the summer heat is just getting started.

We are nearing routine 100 degree days in Texas, with the first 100-degree day in North Texas usually occurring around July 1, according to the National Weather Service.

Days started heating up in May with highs in the upper 80s and reaching the mid 90s.

The unseasonably warm and humid weather was due to warm air coming from the south and southwest. Following the end of the weather pattern La Nina — which lasted an uncharacteristic three years — the Dallas-Fort Worth area was in a transitional period in preparation for El Nino.

Last year the Fort Worth area saw record breaking heat, with the sixth hottest June on record since 1899.

What’s the hottest day ever recorded in North Texas?

The hottest days on record were June 26 and 27 in 1980 when temperatures reached a high of 113 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

The summer of 1980 ranks as second all-time for the number of 100 degree days in the year with 69 total.

There are three days tied for second hottest days at 112 degrees: June 28, 1980, Aug. 11, 1936 and Aug. 18, 1909.

Does the haze have anything to do with the heat?

If you noticed an air quality alert on your phone’s weather app, you are not alone.

Haze in the Fort Worth sky this week is a result of a summer “heat dome” which will likely bring our first protracted heat wave of the summer next week, according to the National Weather Service.

When will the Fort Worth area see 100 degree days in 2023?

Extended forecasts for the area show the first 100 degree day happening as soon as Monday for parts of North Texas with triple digits happening in the Fort Worth area on Tuesday.

How many 100 degree days did Fort Worth have in 2022?

There were 47 100 degree days in the Dallas-Fort Worth area last year, which ranks sixth for most 100 degree days on record, according to National Weather Service data.

Between July 16 to Aug. 5 there were 21 consecutive 100 degree days. The most triple digit days happened in July with 27 in total.
