T+L highlights a spring road trip from Austin to Huston along U.S. Route 290 with stunning views of the iconic blooms in spots like Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, Brenham and Buffalo Bayou Park. But if you don’t want to drive down to Austin, North Texans don’t have to travel far to see these flowers.
One of the most celebrated places to view these wildflowers up close is just about a 60-mile drive from Fort Worth. The Official Bluebonnet Trail, located in Ennis, transforms into a vibrant wildflower wonderland in March and April.
The Official Bluebonnet Trail is one of the oldest trails in Texas and is filled with more than 40 miles of mapped routes through vivid countryside. The Bluebonnet Trail draws tens of thousands of visitors each year looking to get a glimpse of the iconic blue blooms at its peak.
This rich indigo flower was declared the Texas State Flower in March 1901 and is cherished as part of the Texas identity.
Each April, Ennis hosts the Ennis Bluebonnet Trails Festival, with live music, food vendors, crafts and maps to assist visitors to find the most impressive blooms.
The trails are scouted daily by volunteers who update the official Bluebonnet Trail website with the best viewing spots. If you’re a Texas native or just passing through, the bluebonnet trails in Austin, Huston or Ennis offer a picture-worthy way to celebrate spring.
