Three young children were inside of a man’s car when he was fatally shot outside a McDonald’s in an apparent drug deal gone wrong, Texas police told news outlets.

The 23-year-old man arrived at a McDonald’s in Katy, a suburb of Houston, on the night of Monday, Sept. 9, and met with a group of three other men in the parking lot, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office told KRIV.

There were two women and three kids, ages 2 to 9, sitting in his car during the meeting, deputies told the TV station.

Investigators believe it was a drug deal, according to KTRK. But at about 11:15 p.m., one of the group members took something from the man, and that’s when deputies say gunfire erupted.

The man was flown to a hospital for treatment but ultimately died from his injuries, the sheriff’s office told the outlet.

Deputies say the three men fled the scene and authorities are searching for them, KPRC reported.

Nobody inside the man’s car was injured, officials told the station. An investigation is underway.

Katy is a roughly 30-mile drive west from downtown Houston.
