A Michigan mother and son were gunned down, one fatally, after an argument turned violent in Detroit, police told news outlets.

The woman’s son was talking with a juvenile acquaintance on the city’s east side at about 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, when the shooting happened, the Detroit Police Department told WWJ.

It’s not clear what was said, but the conversation grew heated between the two, and the mom stepped in to de-escalate the situation, police told the station.

But her attempt to calm things down apparently didn’t work, and the acquaintance pulled out a gun, shooting the mom and son, WDIV reported, citing police.

The mother died, and her son is hospitalized in critical condition, police told the outlet.

“It’s just one of those things that doesn’t make sense,” a police official said, WXYZ reported. “You got two people over here, associates hanging out. All of a sudden, they get in an argument, it escalates, we got two people shot. It’s just ridiculous.”

Investigators say no arrests have been made and the shooter has not been identified, the station reported. The mother was not identified in news reports.
