Birth control is now available over the counter nationwide, including in Texas.

The first contraceptive of its kind, Opill, is already on pre-order and will be sold at major retail stores like Walmart, Target, and CVS. ‘

“For people in this country to have increased access to a more effective contraceptive method than what’s currently available is really an incredible feat,” said global lead of medical affairs for the medication’s manufacturer, Stephanie Sober.

The Federal Drug Administration approved the pill for non-prescription use in July 2023.

Birth control is a hot topic in Texas, in addition to abortion. After much debate, the Fort Worth Independent School District was recently approved to launch a brand-new sex education program that is centered around abstinence.

The U.S. Supreme Court left it up to individual states to regulate abortions shortly after ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which rendered controversial Roe v. Wade provisions moot.

Nearly all abortions are banned in Texas. People who want the procedure continue to seek care out of state.

Here’s what to know about Opill, an over-the-counter birth control pill

Opill, also referred to as norgestrel, is a daily oral contraceptive pill that only contains progestin, according to the FDA. The drug must be taken consistently each day to avoid decreased effectiveness and the possibility of pregnancy. Headaches, nausea, breast discomfort, and irregular vaginal bleeding are common side effects. It is safe to take for most people, though the FDA recommends people with medical conditions shouldn’t use it. Norgestrel is not a STI (sexually transmitted infection) preventive drug.

Opill will be available for purchase later this month for the company’s suggested retail price of $19.99 for a one-month supply and $49.99 for a three-month supply. It will also be available for purchase online with a three month supply being sold at $49.99 and $89.99 for six months.
