Fort Worth is exploring its legal options after a survey error failed to show a federal floodway that will add $8 million to the cost of its new city hall building.

The city is considering spending $150,000 to hire law firm Cantey Hanger LLP, according to city documents.

Fort Worth purchased the Pier 1 tower for $70 million in 2021.

The city planned to build a new city council chamber as an addition to the tower; however, the survey done before the purchase failed to account for a federal floodway.

The city must now go through a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers process, and spend $8 million to make sure the new council chamber does not negatively impact the federal floodway.

The council will also vote on whether to take out $50 million in debt to pay for the new city hall project.

Inflation, adding more employees to the building, and the federal floodway all contributed to the $50 million in cost overruns.

The city council will vote on both items Tuesday.
