A man was dragged and run over by a driver who he had been trying to help put her seat belt on, Alabama police said.

Officers responded to a report of a man being hit by a car at about 10:40 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, outside of a hotel, the Mobile Police Department said in news release.

The man was taken to a hospital with “possible life-threatening injuries,” police said in the release.

He told detectives that as he was trying to help a woman put her seat belt on, she pushed him out of the vehicle, closed the door on his arm and drove away while he was still on the car, police said.

The driver then ran him over, he said, according to police.

On April 23, police arrested 66-year-old Mary Hardy in connection to the incident. She is charged with domestic violence in the first degree and assault in the first degree, police said.

The Mobile Police Department did not say how Hardy and the man were connected.
