A mom shielded her 5-year-old daughter as a pizza delivery driver mad about a tip from earlier stabbed the woman more than a dozen times, Florida authorities said.

The mom, who was pregnant, underwent surgery for a ruptured lung but survived the attack, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said in a Dec. 25 Facebook post.

The driver, identified as 22-year-old Brianna Alvelo, is charged with attempted murder with a weapon, home invasion with a firearm, kidnapping and aggravated assault, deputies wrote in an arrest affidavit.

The evening of Dec. 22, Alvelo delivered pizza and wings to a motel room in Kissimmee, where a man, his girlfriend and his girlfriend’s 5-year-old daughter were staying to celebrate his birthday, deputies said.

Alvelo couldn’t give the mom change for a $50 bill, so the woman rummaged through her wallets for a smaller bill, went to her car and finally asked her boyfriend for $5, leaving the delivery driver with a $2 tip, according to deputies.

Alvelo left, but about an hour and a half later, she came back with a man armed with a gun and banged on the motel room door as the family slept, deputies said.

The mom got up to answer the door as the pair forced themselves into the room, and the armed man held the boyfriend in the bathroom at gunpoint, according to deputies. Meanwhile, Alvelo is accused of tearing through their belongings and smashing the 5-year-old’s Nintendo Switch.

Then Alvelo pulled out a pocket knife, and the mom turned around to shield her daughter as Alvelo stabbed the woman in the back, deputies said.

The mom said she tried to grab her phone, but Alvelo is accused of smashing it and continuing to stab the woman.

According to the affidavit, the man eventually said it was time to go, and the two accused intruders left. They told the couple “they knew what they were there for,” according to the affidavit.

First responders reported finding the mom with 14 stab wounds, but after surgery she was in stable condition.

Law enforcement hasn’t identified the man accused of working with Alvelo.

Kissimmee is part of the Orlando metro area.
