Can you change DFW flights for free because of Hurricane Milton? Here’s what to know

Many flights in and out of Florida are expected to be impacted by Hurricane Milton this week.

The hurricane is expected to make landfall in Florida late Wednesday, Oct. 9, bringing destructive winds and heavy rainfall to the state, according to the National Hurricane Center. Many Central Florida cities such as Tampa, Orlando and St. Petersburg will be impacted by the storm.

Given Hurricane Milton’s Florida trajectory, North Texas will not be impacted by the storm, according to the National Weather Service Fort Worth office.

Many airlines have already issued travel alerts ahead of Milton’s landfall. Here’s which are offering ticket changes due to the storm:

American Airlines

If you’re traveling to, through, or from:

  • Daytona Beach, Florida
  • Fort Lauderdale, Florida
  • Fort Myers, Florida
  • Gainesville, Florida
  • Jacksonville, Florida
  • Key West, Florida
  • Melbourne, Florida
  • Miami, Florida
  • Orlando, Florida
  • Sarasota / Bradenton, Florida
  • Tampa, Florida
  • West Palm Beach, Florida

American Airlines will let you change flights for free if:

  • You are traveling on an American Airlines flight.
  • Are booked in any fare class.
  • Bought your ticket by Oct. 5.
  • Are scheduled to travel between Oct. 8-10.
  • Are able to travel between Oct. 6-17.
  • Don’t change your origin or destination city.
  • Rebook in the same cabin or pay the difference.

Southwest Airlines

Southwest passengers may rebook or travel standby (within 14 days of their original travel date) for free if they have flight reservations from Oct. 8-12 to, through, or from the following cities:

  • Charleston, South Carolina
  • Destin/Fort Walton Beach, Florida
  • Fort Lauderdale, Florida
  • Fort Myers, Florida
  • Jacksonville, Florida
  • Miami, Florida
  • Orlando, Florida
  • Panama City Beach, Florida
  • Pensacola, Florida
  • Sarasota/Bradenton, Florida
  • Savannah, Georgia
  • Tampa, Florida
  • West Palm Beach, Florida

Delta is waving fare differences when passengers rebook travel on or before Oct. 15 in the same cabin of service as originally booked for the following destinations:

  • Daytona Beach, Florida
  • Fort Myers, Florida
  • Gainesville, Florida
  • Jacksonville, Florida
  • Key West, Florida
  • Melbourne, Florida
  • Orlando, Florida
  • Sarasota, Florida
  • Tampa, Florida

United is waving change fees and fare differences for passengers with tickets purchased on or before Oct. 4 for travel dates between Oct. 7-12 to the following affected destinations:

  • Miami, Florida
  • West Palm Beach, Florida
  • Fort Myers, Florida
  • Sarasota, Florida
  • Tampa, Florida
