When can you expect the first freeze in Dallas-Fort Worth? It won’t be long

Despite fall being in full swing, Dallas-Fort Worth is still dealing with warm temperatures.

The region ended September in the 90s, and similar temperatures followed into the first week of October. Next week looks to be slightly cooler with temperatures ranging from mid 80s to mid 90s, according to National Weather Service Fort Worth.

Cooler temperatures will eventually arrive in Dallas-Fort Worth, but what about the first freeze of the season? Here’s what to know:

When does Dallas-Fort Worth normally record its first freeze?

On average, the first freeze in Dallas-Fort Worth occurs on Nov. 22, according to the NWS.

The region has certainly recorded freezing temperatures before and after then, but on average, that’s when it occurs. On average, the final freeze of the season occurs on March 12.

When has the first freeze happened previously?

Over the last decade, November and December are the months most likely to record the first freeze of the season in North Texas:

  • 2023- 32 degrees on Nov. 27
  • 2022- 30 degrees on Nov. 20
  • 2021- 32 degrees on Dec. 12
  • 2020- 32 degrees on Nov. 30
  • 2019- 30 degrees on Oct. 31
  • 2018- 32 degrees on Nov. 10
  • 2017- 32 degrees on Dec. 7
  • 2016- 28 degrees on Dec. 8
  • 2015- 30 degrees on Nov. 22
  • 2014- 31 degrees on Nov. 12

What’s the earliest freeze in DFW history?

That would be well over a century ago when 31 degrees was recorded on Oct. 22, 1898.
