Firefighters injured, department car hit on busy night for Fort Worth fire crews
Two firefighters were injured and a battalion chief’s car was struck in oncoming traffic Tuesday night as the department responded to three separate incidents, officials said on social media.
The call for the first incident, a house fire on Cornish Avenue in the city’s south side, came in about 9:45 p.m., according to the department’s Facebook post.
On arrival, firefighters found heavy flames coming from the wood-frame house, officials said. After 20 minutes of firefighting, the blaze was declared under control.
The home’s two residents were taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, and two firefighters were taken to be treated for minor burns, according to the post.
The residents’ pets did not survive despite rescue efforts, and the American Red Cross provided assistance to the two displaced adults, officials said.
At 1:43 a.m., the department received a report of another house fire on Whisper Drive in far southwest Fort Worth, according to the post. When fire crews arrived, they found smoke and heavy fire coming from the two-story brick home.
The incident commander on scene then declared the second working fire of the night as crews searched the house, officials said.
The Red Cross provided assistance to the four adults and one child displaced from that home, and no injuries were reported.
The cause of both house fires is under investigation, officials said.
As crews responded to the house fire on Whisper Drive, other crews were working to extricate an injured victim from an accident on Interstate 35W, according to the post.
Despite efforts to secure that scene from oncoming traffic, a battalion chief’s car was hit by a driver who did not yield to first responders, officials said. No one was injured in that crash.
Fort Worth police could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday on whether the motorist will face any charges.
