Homeowner who jumped out window to escape armed robbers faces long recovery
The Fort Worth homeowner who jumped out a window to escape armed men during an early morning break-in July 25 suffered physical and mental trauma and faces a long recovery, according to his family.
Cristian Robles was asleep in his house in the 1400 block of East Maddox Avenue when three men wearing ski masks forced a door open and got inside, according to police and Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV reporting.
“I just remember hearing noises and, from there, just instinct,” Robles told WFAA.
The 30-year-old grabbed his handgun and fired at the suspects. Two of the men ran, but the third stayed in the house and fired back, according to the GoFundMe set up by Robles’ family.
“Cristian was unaware of how many men were still in his house and made the split-second decision to break a window and jump out and seek help,” the GoFundMe states.
Robles sustained deep cuts to his arms and legs and lost a significant amount of blood, according to the GoFundMe. A tendon in his foot required surgery and a nerve in that area was cut as well. Due to his injuries, Robles has been unable to return to his work as a licensed physical massage therapist.
“The break-in shattered Cristian’s sense of safety in his own home,” his aunt Erika Robles wrote in the fundraiser. “There were over 50 bullet holes left in the home and over 50 stitches on his body.”
One wounded suspect was arrested, police say
Shortly after the break-in, officers responded to a shooting call one street over from Robles’ home. Police said they believe the injured man, 23-year-old Anthony Gerardo Baeza, was shot during the home invasion and called 911 for help. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Baeza was arrested on an out-of-town warrant. He now faces a burglary charge, according to court records. He’s being held in the Tarrant County Jail on $100,000 bond.
No other arrests have been announced in connection with the break-in at Robles’ home.
Robles will need physical therapy to fully recover, according to the GoFundMe. Money from the fundraiser will help cover his medical expenses.
“Cristian doesn’t seek violence,” Erika Robles said in the GoFundMe. “He’s simply a hard-working young man whose life was turned upside down in a blink of an eye.”
