‘I’m just empty’: Family speaks out after man fatally shot by Haltom City police
The family of the man who was shot and killed by police at a Haltom City apartment on Thursday say they are looking for answers.
It’s still not clear what led to at least one officer opening fire on Quaincy Tyron Page. The 31-year-old died inside the apartment he shared with his girlfriend and some of her family, Page’s mother told KXAS-TV.
“I want answers,” Ladonna Scott said to KXAS. “I’m hurt. Pain and hurt. I’m just empty.”
According to a news release the Haltom City Police Department posted on Facebook, officers were dispatched to the 5500 block of Buster Driver shortly after 12:40 a.m. on July 24. Someone had called 911 to say they needed police at the Heritage Apartments. Then the line abruptly disconnected.
“During the encounter, an individual, who was initially hesitant to communicate, was involved in an officer-involved shooting,” the post reads. Police said they gave immediate medical aid to Page, but he died from gunshot wounds.
Page’s family is still trying to piece together what happened. They were told by Page’s girlfriend that he called 911, but it’s unclear why, according to KXAS reporting. Police have not confirmed that he was the caller.
Page’s girlfriend told Scott that the officers entered the apartment. “Three cops going to come and bust the door off the hinges,” Scott told KXAS. “Why did you have to kill him? Why did you have to kill him? He didn’t have a gun.”
Police have not said if Page had a weapon or how many officers were involved.
Page’s older sister, Ladanna Cullom, said she understands from his girlfriend that the 31-year-old may have grabbed a knife at one point, KXAS reported. “They said he had grabbed a knife after police were showing force,” Cullom told KXAS. “They could have used a different technique. They are trained police officers — there are many ways they could have went about that. They could have shot without the intention to kill.”
Cullom described Page as kind and sweet and her children’s favorite uncle, KXAS reported. “I never would have thought my brother would have been a victim,” she said.
No officers were injured during the incident. Police have promised a “thorough and transparent investigation,” and pledged to “provide further updates as appropriate.”
“The Haltom City Police Department takes the use of force very seriously and understands the significant public interest in such incidents,” officials said on Facebook.
The Texas Rangers are also investigating the shooting, police said.
