A suspect was critically injured during a home invasion early Friday when the homeowner opened fire to defend himself, Fort Worth police said.

Officers responded to the burglary in the 1400 block of East Maddox Avenue at about 3:15 a.m. The homeowner told them several men wearing ski masks and carrying guns had broken into his house, police said. He fired at them, and the suspects returned fire.

The homeowner fled through a window, cutting his leg in the process, according to police. He called 911, and the armed men ran away.

Officers also responded to a shooting call in the 1400 block of East Myrtle Avenue, one street north. Police said they believe the injured man was shot during the home invasion and called 911 for help. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Gun Violence Unit detectives are investigating the shooting. The other two suspects who are believed to have broken into the residence are not in custody, according to police.
