Fort Worth officer investigating burglar alarm shoots at armed business owner, police say
The Fort Worth Police Department is investigating after an officer who was checking out a burglar alarm early Wednesday fired his gun at the armed business owner, officials said.
Officers were dispatched to a restaurant in the 1100 block of Terminal Road around 3:50 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, police officials said in a news release. A commercial burglar alarm had been activated for that location, and the officers were told one of the restaurant’s doors was open.
The officers arrived shortly before 4 a.m. and began checking for any signs of an intruder or forced entry. They were at the back of the building when they saw a man holding a gun, according to the release. The officers told the man to show his hands, but he didn’t immediately follow their instructions, according to police.
“Fearing for their safety, one officer fired his duty weapon at the man,” the release states.
The man wasn’t injured by the gunfire, and immediately complied with the officers, according to the release. He was taken into custody, but released when police learned he was the owner of the restaurant.
Detectives later found that someone had broken into the the restaurant and a back storage area, officials said in the release.
No one was injured in the incident, and no arrests were made, police said. The Major Case Unit and the Internal Affairs Unit are investigating the shooting per standard procedure.
