6-vehicle pileup crash that killed 1 shuts down I-35W in Fort Worth on Thursday morning
All southbound lanes of Interstate 35W were shut down near Interstate 20 in south Fort Worth for several hours Thursday morning Oct. 31 due to a major crash that killed one person and injured four more, officials said.
The southbound ramps from I-20 were also closed, the Texas Department of Transportation posted on social media around 7:20 a.m. Drivers were encouraged to seek alternate routes for their morning commute. The lanes reopened shortly before 11 a.m.
Six vehicles were involved in the pileup accident on I-35W near Sycamore School Road, according to Fort Worth police. The accident was reported shortly before 5:45 a.m.
Police said their preliminary investigation found that a small passenger car rear-ended another small sedan, which started a chain-reaction accident involving a total of five passenger vehicles and one commercial vehicle.
Two occupants of the first car were taken to a hospital with serious injuries, and a third passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the person who died.
A separate accident involving an 18-wheeler shut down two northbound lanes of I-35W near Everman Parkway early Thursday around 3:15 a.m. The 18-wheeler left the road and hit a guardrail, according to Fort Worth police.
The cab was hanging off the overpass, but the guardrail and trailer kept it from falling all the way over. Photos from the scene showed the cab of the semi truck resting on the ground upside down.
The driver was able to be extricated from the tractor-trailer without injury, police said. The two right northbound lanes were closed while the accident was being cleared.
