A family of four died early Sunday morning when their car traveled the wrong way on Loop 820 in Fort Worth and hit a pickup truck head-on, according to police. A woman in the pickup also was killed, and her fiance was hospitalized.

The crash was reported about 3:30 a.m. Oct. 27 on westbound Northwest Loop 820 just past Marine Creek Parkway.

The family’s Ford Focus caught fire after the collision, and a couple and their two children were trapped inside, according to police. The pickup truck also caught fire, and officers had to push the two vehicles apart to keep the truck from fully burning, a police spokesperson said.

Witnesses told investigators that the Focus entered the freeway going the wrong direction at the Azle Avenue exit ramp and continued eastbound in the westbound middle lane until the crash.

The five victims were pronounced dead at the accident scene by medical personnel. The man who was hospitalized was in serious condition but is expected to survive, according to MedStar.

Police have not released the ages or names of those who died. They will be identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police have not determined why the family’s car was traveling in the wrong direction on the freeway.

The department’s Traffic Investigations Unit will continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the fiery crash, police said.

Loop 820 was closed to traffic for about six hours following the crash.
