Fort Worth teen shot at truck, but killed 17-year-old in nearby car, warrant says
As three vehicles chased each other down streets in north Fort Worth, 18-year-old Jesus Diaz fired shots at a white Ford F-150, missing the driver, according to a warrant.
But one shot went through the truck and hit the back windshield of a white Dodge Challenger with passenger Alejandro Garcia in the back seat, the warrant says.
Fort Worth homicide detectives talked to witnesses and tracked leads that led them to Diaz’s arrest on Tuesday.
The Fort Worth teen is expected to be charged with murder in the case.
The fatal shooting ended a night of accusations between groups of people of paintball vandalism, shots fired in the air and a minor traffic accident, according to the warrant.
Early Sunday, a group of people which included Garcia stood around on a driveway of a home in north Fort Worth when an unknown man walked up to them and confronted them about whether they had been shooting his vehicle with paintballs.
The group denied it and the man said, “Bet,” and walked back to his home, according to the warrant obtained by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram on Wednesday. The warrant was written by Detective T.S. O’Brien.
The group got into the white Dodge Challenger and began to back up out of the driveway when a black SUV stopped and two men got out, the warrant says. The men tried to get them out of the car, but they managed to drive away.
The black SUV caught up to the young people in the Dodge Challenger, and the men asked them to pull over so they could talk, but the Challenger drove on.
As the SUV and Challenger drove past his home, the owner of a Ford F-150 heard several gunshots as if they were shooting in the air. He got into his truck and began to follow the two vehicles to get license plate information for the police.
Minutes later, witnesses in the Dodge Challenger said they saw the white Ford F-150.
The truck passed the black SUV, but it slightly collided with the SUV.
When the truck was behind the Challenger, a witness in the car said he heard a gunshot that broke his back window, according to the warrant.
The driver of the truck also reported his back window was hit, causing him to turn off and go home. He later told police he didn’t have a gun.
At some point, Diaz had fired three to four times at the Ford F-150 and the Dodge Challenger was directly in front of the truck, according to the warrant.
When the Challenger pulled away from the truck and stopped at an intersection, the group realized that Garcia had been shot.
The driver of the Challenger drove to a QuikTrip at 1400 N. Main St., where they called police.
Fort Worth police arrived and found Garcia with a gunshot wound to his head. Garcia was taken to a local hospital, where he died a few hours later.
Diaz was in the Tarrant County Jail on Wednesday in lieu of $100,000 bond.
