Fort Worth’s Mayfest canceled amid coronavirus pandemic; event rescheduled for 2021

Fort Worth’s Mayfest, which is held annually at Trinity Park, has been canceled, officials announced on Wednesday.

The Fort Worth event, which was scheduled for April 30 to May 3, will return in 2021.

“This difficult decision was made with great consideration for our volunteers, vendors, partners and the community who have all shown continuous support and devotion to Mayfest throughout the years,” according to a statement released on social media by Mayfest officials on Wednesday.

Mayfest officials said the postponement came because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event began in 1973 as the Trinity River Festival as a celebration for the improvements made in the area after the devastating flood in Fort Worth in 1949.

Just recently, Mayfest officials had announced free admission for all patrons to the opening on April 30.

But officials noted on Wednesday they reached their decision with “heavy hearts.”

Mayfest officials said they also would refund all parties their financial commitments as a reprieve during the pandemic.

“We appreciate your continued support during this time,” their statement said. “Mayfest has brought the Fort Worth community together and countless memories have been made at the beloved festival for 48 years.”
